Day-trip from Helsinki (35–45 min by R train) for Ainola and the Lake Tuusula shore; sleep here only if you want a quiet base north of the city.
Järvenpää is a small city 40 km north of Helsinki at the north end of Lake Tuusula, and the reason to come is the shoreline: the villas of composer Jean Sibelius (Ainola), writer Juhani Aho and painters Eero Järnefelt and Pekka Halonen sit along it. The centre is walkable and the train is quick, so most travellers do it as a half-day or full-day trip from Helsinki rather than a base. One night is enough if you want the lake at a slow pace.

Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk. Local buses and a service bus cover the suburbs and villages; a route planner is on the city site (Finnish). Rent or borrow a bicycle from Järvenpää Art Museum (fee included in the ticket). Electric kick scooters are available in the centre via apps. Taxis and ride apps (Petax, Valopilkku, 02 Taksi) work; fares are metered.
