Tongren同仁
Come for one night, two at most: Wutun Monastery's thangka halls and Longwu Monastery are the whole trip, and both are done by early afternoon.
Tongren (Rebkong in Tibetan) is a small monastic town on the edge of the Tibetan plateau in Qinghai, reached by one mountain road from Xining, Xiahe or Linxia. Travellers come for Wutun Monastery, 10 km north, where monks paint thangka, and for Longwu Monastery on the town's south-west edge. The town itself is plain, walkable and cheap; the monasteries are the reason to be here.

- China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
- China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
- China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

The centre is small and flat: walk between Longwu Monastery and the market. Wutun Monastery is about 10 km north — roughly an hour on foot or ¥5 per seat in the green shared taxis that run the route.

Safety
- Many cheap hotels north of the monastery do not take foreign passports; ask before you pay.
- Wutun Monastery restricts women's entry in late July to early September — check before you go.
- Only the Construction Bank of China on Zhongshan Lu reliably takes foreign cards; carry cash.
- The road in crosses high passes and can close in snow; do not plan a same-day airport run in winter.
