Come for one night, two at most: Wutun Monastery's thangka halls and Longwu Monastery are the whole trip, and both are done by early afternoon.
Tongren (Rebkong in Tibetan) is a small monastic town on the edge of the Tibetan plateau in Qinghai, reached by one mountain road from Xining, Xiahe or Linxia. Travellers come for Wutun Monastery, 10 km north, where monks paint thangka, and for Longwu Monastery on the town's south-west edge. The town itself is plain, walkable and cheap; the monasteries are the reason to be here.

- Only the Construction Bank of China on Zhongshan Lu reliably takes foreign cards; carry cash.
- The road in crosses high passes and can close in snow; do not plan a same-day airport run in winter.
A small, low-crime town; the real risks are altitude (about 2,500 m), winter road closures and unlicensed drivers offering long-distance lifts.
