East Coulee is a former coal town of a few hundred people in the Red Deer River valley, part of the Town of Drumheller and about 20 km southeast of the Drumheller townsite on Highway 10. It holds two sights worth the drive: the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site, with the last wooden tipple in Canada, and the East Coulee School Museum. There is one guest house and no real restaurant, so most travellers see it as a half-day stop inside a Drumheller badlands trip.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Watch out
Safety
- No fuel, no grocery store and no restaurant in the community: eat in Drumheller or bring food.
- The Atlas Coal Mine and School Museum run seasonal hours; the mine is closed outside its posted season and the museum is private bookings only from October to April.
- Badlands roads and trails get slippery after rain and the hoodoo trail is a rough scramble over rock.
- Summer heat in the valley is dry and strong; carry water and sun cover.
- Cell coverage is patchy in the valley; download offline maps before you leave Drumheller.
