Strathmore is a town of about 14,000 on the Trans-Canada Highway, roughly 50 km east of Calgary, built as a Canadian Pacific Railway stop and still an agricultural and commuter town. There is no old town to walk and no museum cluster: the reasons to stop are the Strathmore Stampede rodeo on the first weekend of August, a round of golf, and motel beds that undercut Calgary on Stampede weeks. Most travellers pass through in an hour or use it as a cheap night on the drive to Drumheller or Medicine Hat.

Getting around

A car is the only practical way to move around: sights, the golf club and the rodeo grounds sit on the edge of town. The centre is walkable in about 15 minutes end to end. Calgary Transit does not serve Strathmore; intercity buses and shuttles stop on the highway side, not downtown.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 1, wildlife on rural roads at dusk, and long distances to the nearest hospital for anything serious.
  • No public transit in town: without a car you are limited to the main street.
  • Winter driving on Highway 1: black ice and blowing snow, and long gaps between services east of town.
  • Rodeo and Stampede weekends sell out the few hotels: book weeks ahead.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the back roads north and south.
