Eckerö is a scattered island municipality on mainland Åland, 35–40 minutes by bus from Mariehamn and two hours by ferry from Grisslehamn in Sweden. It holds the Russian-era Mail and Customs House, a hunting and fishing museum, a guest harbour at Käringsund and some of the sunniest summer weather in the Nordic. One night covers it; a half-day covers the museum cluster.

Getting around

The island is small but spread out; bus line 1 links Mariehamn and Eckerö in 35–40 minutes. A car or bicycle makes the museum, harbour and beaches reachable in one day; taxis are limited, so book ahead if you have no vehicle.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are thin evening buses, unlit rural roads after dark and cold water; swim only where locals do and take a light jacket even in July.
  • Most sights and the guest harbour open mid-May to late August only; outside that window check before travelling.
  • The ferry crossing changes time zone and currency between Sweden and Åland; exit EU customs/VAT rules apply on arrival.
  • Alcohol and tobacco allowances differ from mainland Finland; check the rules before you carry more than duty-free amounts.
  • Bus service is thin in the evening; confirm the last departure from Mariehamn.
