Mariehamn is the capital and only town of Åland, a demilitarised Swedish-speaking archipelago between Finland and Sweden. It is small, walkable and built around two harbours, with a maritime-museum core and a wooded peninsula you can cross on foot in half an hour. Most travellers arrive by ferry from Stockholm, Turku or Helsinki, or by a short flight from Stockholm, Turku or Helsinki. Two nights covers the town; add nights only if you plan to cycle or island-hop.

Getting around

The centre is compact and flat: walk it. Local buses (Ålandstrafiken lines N, S, Ö, V and J) run from the Nygatan hub, single ticket €2.5, valid 2 hours. Bikes rent from the Ro-No harbour shops and most accommodation. Long-distance buses leave from the bus station next to the library. A car is only useful for the countryside.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists; the real risks are winter ice and dark, scarce ATMs, and ferry timetables that strand you at Långnäs. Use 112 for emergencies.
  • Åland is outside the EU VAT area: duty-free rules differ from normal EU travel, and customs limits apply on arrival.
  • ATMs are scarce; carry a card and some cash. Most shops take Visa and MasterCard, some refuse Visa Electron.
  • Shops close around 17:00–17:30 on weekdays and 14:00 on Saturdays; Thursday is the late evening.
  • Many sights, cafés and the Pommern run May–September only; check dates before booking a winter trip.
  • Ferries calling at Långnäs (25 km away) need a bus or taxi to town; the Viking Line night bus costs €19 (≈ US$25) against €2.50 (≈ US$3) in daytime.
