Yonezawa米沢
Give Yonezawa one night, or two if you sleep at an onsen: the castle ruins, Uesugi Shrine and the beef are a half-day, the hot springs are the reason to stay.
Yonezawa is a former castle town in southern Yamagata, on the Yamagata Shinkansen about 2 hours from Tokyo. The Uesugi clan's shrine and the castle moats sit in one park, the Uesugi Museum holds National Treasures, and the town is the home of Yonezawa beef and Toko sake. The station is 2 km from the centre, so plan the walk or a taxi.

Watch out
Safety
- The Yonesaka line south of Imaizumi has been cut since 2022 flood damage and may not run through: check before planning it.
- Local buses are few and stop early; a missed last bus means a taxi.
- Yonezawa beef is expensive: a small steak can pass ¥8,000 (≈ US$55), so sukiyaki or a set menu is the cheaper way in.
- Winter brings heavy snow; the park and shrine paths can be icy.
