  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Akron is a former rubber capital of about 200,000 people in Northeast Ohio, an hour south of Cleveland by car on I-77. Its draws are spread across town — a Tudor mansion, a modern art museum, a minor-league ballpark and a towpath trail — so a car or rideshare makes the day work. Most travellers pass through for one night or use it as a cheaper base for Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Canton hall of fame.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

METRO RTA buses cover the main corridors but run on limited schedules; most visitors drive or use rideshare. I-76, I-77, Route 8 and Route 59 (Innerbelt) put almost everything within 10 minutes of an expressway, and rush hour is short. Taxis and rideshare are thin late at night — book ahead.

Watch out

Safety

Akron is a normal mid-size US city: downtown and Highland Square are fine by day and evening, but avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar blocks south and east of downtown, keep car doors locked at lights, and use rideshare after dark.
  • Winter ice and lake-effect snow from Dec to Mar; allow extra time on I-77 and I-76.
  • Some downtown blocks are quiet after dark; stick to Main St, Lock 3 and Highland Square.
  • Stan Hywet closes for part of winter — check dates before you plan around it.
  • Rideshare can be slow to arrive outside downtown; have a taxi number as backup.
