  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Kent is a college town of about 29,000 on the Cuyahoga River, 40 minutes south of Cleveland and 20 minutes east of Akron. It is a Kent State University town first: the May 4, 1970 site, a fashion museum, a hearing-aid museum and a walkable downtown strip. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night stop inside a Northeast Ohio trip, not a destination on its own.

Arrive & move

Getting around

Downtown and campus are walkable and linked by the Lester Lefton Esplanade. PARTA buses cover Kent and Portage County, with the Kent Central Gateway as the hub. Bikes work well: the Portage Hike and Bike Trail runs from John Brown Tannery Park toward Ravenna, and Kent State runs a dockless rental fleet.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Akron

go

Door to door: About 30–45 min

Car on I-76, or PARTA bus from Kent

Bigger city with its own museums and food scene.

Cuyahoga Falls

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Car north on Route 59 / State Road

Riverfront downtown and the Cuyahoga Valley park edge.

Hudson, Ohio

go

Door to door: About 25 min

Car north on Route 91

Historic village green with shops and restaurants.

Ravenna, Ohio

caution

Door to door: About 30 min by bike

Portage Hike and Bike Trail by bike, or car east

Small county seat; the trail is the better reason to go.

Streetsboro

skip

Door to door: About 15 min

Car north on Route 43 to the Ohio Turnpike

Mostly highway services and shopping; no sight of its own.

Barberton, Ohio

caution

Door to door: About 35 min

Car southwest via Route 261 / I-76

Lake and park; a half-day at most.

Stow

skip

Door to door: About 15 min

Car north on Route 91

Suburban shopping; only worth it for the small university airport.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Kent

Walk to restaurants, the Kent Stage and the river trail; best for one night without a car.

Along East Main Street / Route 59

Chain hotels with parking, 5–10 min drive from downtown.

Near Kent State campus

Closest to the May 4 site and the museums; quiet when classes are out.

Watch out

Safety

Kent is a low-risk college town; the real issues are winter ice, unlit paths after dark and event-night crowds downtown. Standard US precautions apply.
  • A car helps: sights are spread between downtown, campus and the stadium, and sidewalks do not reach everywhere.
  • Football and event days fill hotels and roads near campus; book ahead.
  • Winter brings snow and ice on pavements from December to March.
  • Some campus museums keep semester-only hours and close between terms: check before you go.
