Lismore is the inland administrative centre of the Northern Rivers, about 29,000 people, on the Wilsons River between the coast and the rainforest ranges. It is a working town with a university, hospital and courthouse, plus a small arts and café strip. Most travellers use it as a cheaper, quieter base for Nimbin, Nightcap National Park and the waterfalls, or as a wet-weather fallback when the coast is packed. The 2022 flood damaged about 4,000 properties and parts of the low-lying CBD are still recovering, so check current conditions before booking a ground-floor stay.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the town spreads out and the day trips are all rural. Local buses (Northern Rivers Buslines, Wallers) run town and regional routes but are thin on evenings and weekends. Taxis cover the centre. Driving is on the left; watch for wildlife at dusk on the hinterland roads.

Safety

Lismore is a small regional city and street crime is low; the real risks are floodwater, wildlife on rural roads at dusk and thin mobile coverage in the ranges.
  • Flooding: the Wilsons River rises fast after heavy rain. Check the NSW SES and council alerts, and never drive through water over the road.
  • Some CBD blocks still show 2022 flood damage; check recent photos or reviews before booking ground-floor accommodation.
  • Rural roads to Nimbin, The Channon and Nightcap are narrow and winding; avoid them after dark.
  • Mobile coverage drops in the ranges and national parks.
  • Swimming in the Wilsons River is legal and the water is safe, but it runs brown with sediment and the banks are slippery.
