Gdańsk

Give Gdańsk 2–3 nights: one full day for the Main Town and Solidarity, one for Sopot or Malbork. Skip a car; trams and SKM trains cover everything.

Gdańsk is Poland's Hanseatic port city on the Baltic, the capital of the Pomorskie region and the birthplace of the Solidarity movement. The rebuilt Main Town packs the Royal Way, St Mary's Church and the riverside into a walkable core, while the SKM coastal train links Sopot and Gdynia in under 30 minutes. Two to three nights covers the city and one day trip; May to September is the best window, with July and August the busiest and priciest.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Poland ↗Poland is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Poland ↗The currency is the Polish złoty (PLN), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion.
  • Poland ↗Most shops close on most Sundays under the trading law; small convenience stores and station shops are the exception.
  • Poland ↗The border areas with Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad region have restricted zones; follow your own government's advice before travelling near them.

Getting around

Trams and buses run on a single-journey ticket (4.80 zł) or time tickets (75 min for 6 zł, 24 h for 22 zł); validate paper tickets at the start. The SKM coastal train links Gdańsk Główny, Wrzeszcz, Oliwa, Sopot and Gdynia roughly every 15 minutes from about 05:00 to 23:00. Uber and Bolt work and show the fare upfront.

Cliff coast; better as a summer beach day than a year-round trip.

Windsurfing base; pair with Hel rather than day-tripping.

Władysławowo

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Main Town (Główne Miasto)

Inside the rebuilt core, walking distance to the Royal Way and the river; quietest rooms are off Długa and Długi Targ.

Gdańsk Główny station area

Best for early trains and SKM hops to Sopot and Gdynia; cheaper beds, more traffic and pickpocket risk at night.

Wrzeszcz

Local district with tram and SKM links; good value if you do not need to sleep beside the sights.

Oliwa

Greener, quieter north end near the cathedral and park; 15–20 min by SKM to the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Gdańsk is a safe city by day and in the Main Town at night. The real risks are unvalidated tram tickets, pickpockets around Gdańsk Główny, and unofficial airport drivers: use licensed taxis, Uber or Bolt.
  • Validate your tram or bus ticket in the machine on board: inspectors fine roughly 200–300 zł for an unvalidated or wrong ticket.
  • Pickpockets work the Gdańsk Główny station area, especially late.
  • Ignore unofficial drivers who approach you inside the airport arrivals hall; use a licensed taxi, Uber or Bolt.
  • Parking in the Main Town is paid and expensive (about 5.50 zł/h, 09:00–20:00) and traffic around the centre is heavy.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Royal Way, the riverside and Granary Island, Główne Miasto north, and the Solidarity centre.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (St Mary's Church, Main Town Hall, Artus Court, European Solidarity Centre) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Seasonal fixtures for July and August crowds, the St Dominic's Fair and winter light, so gates A–D can go green.
