Hel sits at the tip of a 34 km sand spit, so the journey is longer than the map suggests: about 70 km of road or rail from Gdynia, not 25. The town itself is small and walkable — fishery museum, seal sanctuary, lighthouse, wide beach — and the real draw is the peninsula: cycling, windsurfing and quiet pine forest. Two nights is the sweet spot; one night works if you arrive early and leave late.

Getting around

On foot in town — everything is within about 20 minutes. Bikes are the best way to cover the spit; hire shops are on ulica Kaszubska and ulica Leśna. Polregio trains run along the peninsula to Jurata, Jastarnia, Kuźnica, Chałupy and Władysławowo.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists; the real risks are the single road, cold Baltic water, strong wind on the spit and summer crowds. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty.
  • One road and one rail line serve the whole spit: any accident or summer queue can stop the peninsula for hours.
  • The DW 216 road has no shoulder outside towns and the last stretch past Jurata is winding; drive with care and fill up before the spit.
  • Parking in Hel is paid in season — ask your accommodation for a spot.
  • Trains and ferries in Jul–Aug sell out or fill up; book seats and beds ahead.
  • Bunkers and trenches in the forest have barbed wire on the ground — wear closed shoes.
