Tijuana
Give Tijuana 1–2 nights, not a week: use it as a food-and-craft stop from San Diego, then push south to Valle de Guadalupe or Ensenada.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
- Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
- Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
- Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.
Tijuana sits directly against San Diego and is the busiest land border crossing in the world by some measures. Most visitors come for a day or a single night: Avenida Revolución and the craft-beer and food scene in Zona Río, with Playas for the coast. It is a large working city of about 2 million, not a resort, and the useful trip is short and specific.

Getting around
Taxis and rideshare (Uber, DiDi) are the practical way around; agree the fare or use the app before you get in. Local buses are cheap but routes are poorly marked. Walking works inside Zona Centro and along Avenida Revolución.

Watch out
Safety
- Returning to the US on foot can take 30 min to several hours; the SENTRI and Ready Lanes are faster but need an approved card.
- Do not carry firearms or ammunition across the border in either direction.
- Buy Mexican car insurance before driving south; most US rental agreements do not cover Mexico.
- Zona Norte after dark is a red-light district: expect solicitation and drink-price games.

- Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Zona Centro, Zona Río, Playas and the border gate.
- Place pages with verified cutoffs (Avenida Revolución, CECUT, Playas fence) and eat pages with last orders.
- Border-wait fixtures for San Ysidro, Otay Mesa and CBX so gates A–D can go green.
