Lieksa sits on the eastern shore of Lake Pielinen in North Karelia, 90 km from Joensuu and close to the Russian border. The draw is wild taiga, old forests and the Ruunaa and Patvinsuo hiking areas, plus the wooden Paateri church. The centre is compact and walkable, but most sights are off the main roads and only practical by car. Trains and coaches from Joensuu and Nurmes reach the town; a ferry across Pielinen has not run regularly since 2020.

Getting around

The centre is compact on foot. Everything else — Ruunaa, Patvinsuo, Paateri, Pikkukili — needs a car or taxi. Coaches serve some sights. Kimppakyyti is a demand-responsive door-to-door ride open to all: order the day before between 16:00 and 18:00, and the driver confirms the departure time. Taxis: Menevä Lieksa, plus the Valopilkku and 02 Taksi apps.

Watch out

Safety

Finland is generally safe and Lieksa is a small town. The real risks are driving on remote forest roads, cold water and weather, and getting lost on trails: tell someone your route and carry a charged phone.
  • Many attractions are off the main roads and reachable only by car; do not plan them on foot.
  • The Pielinen ferry has not run regularly since 2020; check before relying on a crossing.
  • In mosquito season (roughly Jun–Aug) use long sleeves and repellent; in spring flood times wear suitable footwear.
  • Do not rely on untreated water in the nature areas; boil it for a minute.
  • In Reposuo-Kalliolahdensuo, keep to the rules inside the circle trail 15 Apr–10 Jul and keep dogs on a leash.
