Lieksa
Go for 1–2 nights only if you have a car: the taiga, Ruunaa and Pielinen are the point, and the town centre itself is a 2-hour stop.
Lieksa sits on the eastern shore of Lake Pielinen in North Karelia, 90 km from Joensuu and close to the Russian border. The draw is wild taiga, old forests and the Ruunaa and Patvinsuo hiking areas, plus the wooden Paateri church. The centre is compact and walkable, but most sights are off the main roads and only practical by car. Trains and coaches from Joensuu and Nurmes reach the town; a ferry across Pielinen has not run regularly since 2020.

- Do not rely on untreated water in the nature areas; boil it for a minute.
- In Reposuo-Kalliolahdensuo, keep to the rules inside the circle trail 15 Apr–10 Jul and keep dogs on a leash.
Finland is generally safe and Lieksa is a small town. The real risks are driving on remote forest roads, cold water and weather, and getting lost on trails: tell someone your route and carry a charged phone.
