Wonju is a mid-size Gangwon city about 1 h 45 min from Seoul by bus, on the KTX line toward Pyeongchang and Gangneung. It is a transport junction and a hiking base rather than a sightseeing city: Chiaksan National Park, the Sogeum Mountain suspension bridge and a handful of temples and museums carry a single overnight. Most travellers pass through on the way east.

City buses cover the centre and the trailheads; fare about ₩1,100, cheaper with a T-money card, and transfers are free within an hour. Watch out

Safety

Wonju is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are mountain weather, unmarked trail sections and summer downpours: carry rain gear and tell someone your route.
  • July is the wettest month by far; check the forecast before any hike.
  • Chiaksan trails and forest-fire watch periods can close sections — check the park notice before you go.
  • Wonju Airport has no international flights; do not plan an overseas connection through WJU.
  • Some temple and museum sites have irregular hours or closed days — check before travelling out.
