Huay Xai is the Lao town on the Mekong opposite Chiang Khong, Thailand, and the northern end of the two-day slow boat to Luang Prabang via Pakbeng. Almost everything here is transport: the Friendship Bridge IV crossing, two bus stations, the slow-boat pier and the Gibbon Experience office. There is little to see in town, so the useful question is how to time your night here so the boat, the bus or the border does not strand you.

- Touts at the pier and bus stations sell 'VIP' bus tickets at close to double the real price and claim the bus is sold out. Buy at the station instead.
- On a through slow-boat ticket, do not hand over your ticket on the first leg: the second boat is a different crew and will ask you to buy again.
- Border officials ask for small unofficial 'fees' in baht on both sides; the official visa-on-arrival price is separate.
