Treat Huay Xai as a border and slow-boat junction, not a sightseeing stop: one night before the 09:00 boat, or a same-day crossing to Chiang Khong.
Huay Xai is the Lao town on the Mekong opposite Chiang Khong, Thailand, and the northern end of the two-day slow boat to Luang Prabang via Pakbeng. Almost everything here is transport: the Friendship Bridge IV crossing, two bus stations, the slow-boat pier and the Gibbon Experience office. There is little to see in town, so the useful question is how to time your night here so the boat, the bus or the border does not strand you.

Etiquette
- Greeting: Nop (palms together) and 'sabaidee'; avoid: Loud greetings and hugs
- Temples: Covered shoulders and knees, shoes off; avoid: Pointing feet at images; women touching monks
- Keeping calm: Stay relaxed; 'bor pen nyang'; avoid: Anger in public
- Baci ceremony: Keep the white strings on your wrist for three days; avoid: Cutting them off

Scams and watch-outs
- Touts at the pier and bus stations sell 'VIP' bus tickets at close to double the real price and claim the bus is sold out. Buy at the station instead.
- On a through slow-boat ticket, do not hand over your ticket on the first leg: the second boat is a different crew and will ask you to buy again.
- Border officials ask for small unofficial 'fees' in baht on both sides; the official visa-on-arrival price is separate.
- The bridge shuttle runs 08:00–18:00 only, though the border itself is open 06:00–22:00; walking or cycling across is not allowed.
- ATMs cap withdrawals (about 1,000,000–2,000,000 kip) and add a fee; bring baht or US dollars to exchange.
- Speedboats to Luang Prabang are fast, loud and dangerous; read the warnings before booking.
Huay Xai is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are the border touts, unofficial 'fees', fast river boats and mountain roads. Keep your passport and ticket on you and settle fares before you get in.
