Santa Rosa is a small Route 66 town of about 3,000 people where I-40, US 54 and US 84 meet, roughly 2 h east of Albuquerque and 1 h 15 min west of Tucumcari. Its draw is the Blue Hole, an 80 ft spring-fed dive site open year round, plus a handful of spring lakes and a Route 66 car museum. Almost everyone arrives by car and stays a single night.

Safety

A quiet small town; the real hazards are heat, long empty drives on US 54 and US 84, and cold water at the Blue Hole. Standard US precautions apply after dark around the motel strip.
  • Summer afternoons regularly top 32 °C; carry water and dive or hike early.
  • Winter brings cold nights and occasional ice on I-40 and the lakes' access roads.
  • The Blue Hole is deep, cold and a real dive site: only dive with certification and a buddy, and check conditions first.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on US 54 and US 84 outside town.
  • Some older Route 66 motels are basic; check recent photos before booking.
