  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Baltic states ↗Treat the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian borders with Russia and Belarus as closed to your plans: crossings are restricted, change within hours, and sit under advisories on the far side.
  • Baltic states ↗Book open-jaw flights (into Tallinn or Vilnius, out of the other) so the line runs one way; Riga is the biggest airport if you need a single hub.
  • Baltic states ↗Midsummer (23–24 June) is the biggest holiday in all three countries: cities empty, many businesses close and island and coast transport sells out.
  • Latvia ↗Latvia is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Latvian sources for your passport.
  • Latvia ↗Borders with Russia and Belarus are not routes for casual travel; check your government's advice before going near them.
  • Latvia ↗Validate public transport tickets when you board in Riga; inspectors fine unvalidated riders.

Cēsis is a small historic town on the edge of Gauja National Park, about 100 km east of Riga, reachable by hourly bus or a handful of trains. The castle complex, St. John's Church tower and the cobbled Old Town fill half a day; the national park, ski hill and brewery fill the rest. Most travellers come for one night, or as a day trip paired with Sigulda.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is small and flat: walk everywhere. Local buses run but departures are sparse, so walking usually beats waiting. Taxis are cheap; agree the fare or check the meter before you set off. For Gauja National Park trailheads and the ski hill you need a car, taxi or bike.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h

Train toward Riga, about 40 min

Castles and Gauja valley viewpoints; easy to pair with Cēsis on one rail line.

Līgatne

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Bus or car toward Sigulda, then local road

Nature trails and the Soviet bunker; check opening days before going.

Valmiera

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Train or bus north, about 40 min

Castle ruins, theatre and the start of Gauja National Park.

Door to door: About 2 h

Bus or train, roughly hourly

Day-trip both ways is possible but tight; better as your arrival or departure leg.

Straupe

caution

Door to door: About 40 min

Bus or car south-west

Manor and countryside; sparse transport, so go only with a car or a checked timetable.

Madona

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h

Bus or car east

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep there if you go.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old Town and Vienības laukums

Walk to the castle, church and cafés; Hotel Cēsis and guesthouses cluster here.

Around the railway station

Stacijas laukums; practical for early trains and buses, 10 min walk to the Old Town.

Castle Park and May Park edges

Quieter, greener, still under 15 min on foot from the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Cēsis is a quiet, low-crime town and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are taxi meter games, muddy trails, and thin evening services outside summer.
  • Taxi meters: some drivers bump the price with a button press — agree the fare first or use an app.
  • Castle complex hours change by season (May–Sep daily; Oct–Apr shorter, closed Mondays) — check before you go.
  • St. John's Church tower is only open limited hours (weekends) and the top view is partly fenced.
  • Trail surfaces in Gauja National Park get muddy after rain; wear shoes with grip.
  • Many small shops and cafés close early in the evening outside summer.

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for RIX: last bus and train departures field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Old Town and Vienības laukums, castle complex and Castle Park, station quarter, Gauja trailheads.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (castle complex, St. John's Church tower, brewery, ski hill) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Golden and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
