Perissa is Santorini's main beach resort, on the flat south-east coast, 13 km from Fira. A near-continuous black-sand and pebble beach runs south through Perivolos to Agios Georgios, lined with tavernas, bars and hotels. Rooms cost a fraction of caldera prices and the sand is at your door, but you are 30–40 min by bus from the caldera villages and there is no sunset over the sea here.

Getting around

The beach strip is walkable but the coastal road has no real pavement, so watch for scooters and ATVs at night. Local buses run Perissa–Fira roughly hourly in season (about 30 min, pay the driver); Fira is the island hub, so almost every trip changes there. Taxis are few and must usually be booked. ATVs and scooters are the popular way to reach the rest of the island: rent only with a licence and a helmet, and be back before dark, as island roads are poorly lit.

Watch out

Safety

Beach-resort safe, with two real risks: the coastal road has no pavement and scooters use it at speed, and ATV or scooter crashes are the common holiday injury. Swim inside the marked zones, and use 112 for anything urgent.
  • The coastal road has no pavement: walk facing traffic and carry a light at night.
  • No water taxi to Kamari; the headland between them is a steep hike or a long bus ride via Fira.
  • Book taxis and transfers ahead in July–August; supply is short after ferries and flights.
  • ATV and scooter injuries are common; check the machine, wear a helmet and avoid unlit roads after sundown.
  • Most beach businesses close from November to March.
