Perissa
Περίσσα
Base here 2–3 nights if you want a black-sand beach and lower prices than the caldera; skip it if you came for the Oia sunset.
Perissa is Santorini's main beach resort, on the flat south-east coast, 13 km from Fira. A near-continuous black-sand and pebble beach runs south through Perivolos to Agios Georgios, lined with tavernas, bars and hotels. Rooms cost a fraction of caldera prices and the sand is at your door, but you are 30–40 min by bus from the caldera villages and there is no sunset over the sea here.

Get around
The beach strip is walkable but the coastal road has no real pavement, so watch for scooters and ATVs at night. Local buses run Perissa–Fira roughly hourly in season (about 30 min, pay the driver); Fira is the island hub, so almost every trip changes there. Taxis are few and must usually be booked. ATVs and scooters are the popular way to reach the rest of the island: rent only with a licence and a helmet, and be back before dark, as island roads are poorly lit.

Sleep
- Perissa beachfront
- Steps from the sand and the taverna strip; noisier at night, and the beach road has no proper pavement.
- Perissa village, inland of the beach road
- 5–10 min walk to the sand, quieter, and where the cheaper rooms and the bakery are.
- Perivolos and Agios Georgios
- The southern continuation of the same beach; larger pools and beach clubs, more space, still walkable to Perissa.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'kaliméra' (morning) or 'kalispéra' (evening) on entering shops and tavernas; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Hospitality: Accept offered coffee, sweets or raki; it is part of the welcome; avoid: Refusing flatly — take a little
- Churches: Covered shoulders and knees; quiet voices; a small candle donation; avoid: Turning your back on the altar for photos during a service
- Gestures: Wave with the palm turned towards yourself; avoid: The open palm pushed forward (moutza)
- Conversation: Family, food and football are easy topics; avoid: Lecturing on the debt crisis, Türkiye or the name of North Macedonia
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries or wine; arrive a little late; avoid: Leaving food on the plate if you have been served more
- Dress: Casual; long trousers or skirt for monasteries; avoid: Swimwear in town, shops and churches
Scams and watch-outs
- The coastal road has no pavement: walk facing traffic and carry a light at night.
- No water taxi to Kamari; the headland between them is a steep hike or a long bus ride via Fira.
- Book taxis and transfers ahead in July–August; supply is short after ferries and flights.
- ATV and scooter injuries are common; check the machine, wear a helmet and avoid unlit roads after sundown.
- Most beach businesses close from November to March.
Beach-resort safe, with two real risks: the coastal road has no pavement and scooters use it at speed, and ATV or scooter crashes are the common holiday injury. Swim inside the marked zones, and use 112 for anything urgent.
