Know before you go
- Opened in 1969 at about 1,691 m altitude; a Soviet-era training and world-record speed-skating venue, still used for events.
- The dam above the rink was built to hold back mudflows (selevoy potok) after a major 1921 disaster destroyed much of the earlier settlement; it is itself a protective structure, not just a viewpoint.
- The road continues past Medeu to the Shymbulak cable car base, so this can be combined with a ski or gondola day rather than visited alone.
