Santa Ana is El Salvador's second city and the practical base for the west: a walkable historic centre of neo-gothic and neoclassical buildings, plus the country's biggest Maya site and the Santa Ana volcano within an hour. Two nights covers the centre and one day trip; three nights adds the volcano or the Ruta de las Flores. It is a working city, not a resort, and most visitors come for the architecture and the archaeology rather than nightlife.

The historic centre is walkable: Parque Libertad, the cathedral, the theatre and the regional museum sit within about 10 minutes of each other. Local buses (urbanos) run roughly 05:00–21:00 for about US$0.20–0.35; routes are hard to follow and no map is published. Unmetered yellow taxis charge about US$3 for short hops and US$4 across town — agree the price first and name a landmark, not a street address.

Watch out
Safety
- Addresses are confusing: calles north of Calle Libertad have even numbers, south have odd; avenidas west of Avenida Independencia are even, east are odd. Navigate by landmarks.
- House numbers repeat between blocks and drivers often do not know specific streets.
- The area around the old railway station (17a Ave Sur at the end of 7a Calle Oriente) is considered unsafe by locals.
- Road works in the Los Chorros valley between Santa Tecla and Santa Ana have caused long delays since 2024; allow up to 3 h from San Salvador (check).
- At the Valle Nuevo / Las Chinamas border crossing, money changers are pushy — do not hand your immigration slip to anyone.
