Edelény is a small town in the Bódva valley, 25 km north of Miskolc, and its one big draw is the L'Huillier-Coburg Palace, the seventh-largest palace in Hungary and a museum since its 2009–2014 rebuild. Everything else — a heritage museum, two Reformed churches, a lookout tower — is a half-day at most, and the surrounding villages (Szendrő, Szögliget, Szinpetri, Martonyi) hold most of the region's castles and manor houses. There is no local bus or taxi, so come with a car or plan around the regional Volánbusz and the sparse Miskolc trains.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are the sparse evening buses, unlit village roads after dark and deer on the road if you drive at dusk.
  • Almost no English is spoken outside the palace ticket desk; have addresses written down.
  • Several village museums and the Szendrő sights open by appointment only — call ahead or you will find locked doors.
  • The last bus and train back to Miskolc leave in the early evening; check the timetable before you set out.
  • Village pubs and small shops close early and many shut on Sunday afternoon.
