Kütahya

Give Kütahya one night, or two if you want Aizanoi: it is a tile town with a small old quarter, not a headline stop.

Kütahya sits at 970 m on the rail and road line between Eskişehir and Afyonkarahisar, with a preserved Ottoman quarter, a hilltop castle and a tile tradition that still fills the shops. The sights are compact and walkable, so a single night covers the centre; add a second only for the Roman ruins at Aizanoi, 60 km southwest. Few international travellers stop here, and winter is genuinely cold.

Getting around

Walk. The clocktower, Great Mosque, Germiyan Street, the museums and the castle path all sit within about 1.5 km. City buses and dolmuşes exist but you are unlikely to need them; taxis are cheap for the bus station run.

Çavdarhisar (Aizanoi)

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min each way

Bus or car on D240 southwest, about 60 km (37 mi)

Temple of Zeus and the Roman site; few amenities in the village, so carry water and go early.

Eskişehir

go

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Regional train from Kütahya station, about 70 min, several daily

University city with a small old quarter and river cafés; easy half-day or full day.

Afyonkarahisar

go

Door to door: About 2 h by train

Pamukkale Ekspresi south, or bus on D650

Historic houses and a hilltop castle; pairs well as the next stop south.

Sivrihisar

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Bus or car east on D200/D230

Check timings first; easier as a stop between Kütahya and Ankara than a return trip.

Sandıklı

overnight

Door to door: About 3 h

Train or bus south via Afyonkarahisar

Too far for a comfortable return day; fold it into the route south.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Zafer Meydanı and Atatürk Bulvarı

The main square and the strip north of it: hotels, cafés, banks and the Migros supermarket within a few minutes on foot.

Old town around Lise Caddesi

Pedestrian street at the foot of Germiyan Street and the Great Mosque; quieter, closest to the sights.

Near the railway station

About 1 km (0.6 mi) east of the centre; practical for late arrivals or early departures, thin on food.

Watch out

Safety

Kütahya is a calm provincial city and street crime is rare; the practical risks are winter ice on the castle steps, unlit side streets after dark, and shops that quote a price only after you ask.
  • Winter nights drop below freezing at this altitude; pack for it from November to March.
  • The Tile Mosque (Çinili Cami) has been closed for restoration for years with no reopening date: check before walking out to it.
  • Buy tiles by grade — turist işi, fabrika işi, özel iş — and weigh the luggage cost; anything sold as antique is almost certainly not.
  • Never try to export a genuine antiquity: it is a serious offence.
  • The castle is a steep walk up; the road to the top is easier if you have a car.

  • Eskişehir → Kütahya, regional train: about 70 min, several daily (check)
