Afyonkarahisar is a Central Anatolian city 250 km southwest of Ankara, built around a black volcanic crag with a Hittite-founded fortress on top. The draw is the climb, the cluster of Seljuk and Ottoman mosques at its foot, and the geothermal water that feeds spa hotels in town and at Gazlıgöl. It sits on the Ankara–Izmir bus and rail corridor, so it works as a one-night break rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: castle, Ulu Camii and the mosque cluster sit within about 1 km. The bus terminal is 3 km northwest of the centre and the railway station about 1 km northwest of the castle — take a taxi or dolmuş between them and your hotel. No city rail line is running yet.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, ordinary Anatolian city; the real risks are the unshaded 800-step citadel climb, winter ice on those steps, and long gaps in night bus and train timetables. 112 covers everything.
  • The citadel climb is about 800 steps and 226 m up, with no shade: start early, carry water, wear grippy shoes.
  • The Victory Museum is closed long-term for rebuilding, and the archaeological museum has closed — check before planning around either.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and dry; the steps are exposed all day.
  • Bus and train timetables on this corridor are thin at night — confirm the return leg before you commit.
