Give Afyon one night, two if you want a thermal spa: climb the citadel at opening, see the 1277 Ulu Camii, then move on.

Afyonkarahisar is a Central Anatolian city 250 km southwest of Ankara, built around a black volcanic crag with a Hittite-founded fortress on top. The draw is the climb, the cluster of Seljuk and Ottoman mosques at its foot, and the geothermal water that feeds spa hotels in town and at Gazlıgöl. It sits on the Ankara–Izmir bus and rail corridor, so it works as a one-night break rather than a destination in itself.

Bus from Ankara takes about 3 h 30 min; the airport is a further 30 km from the bus terminal. Zafer Airport (KZR) is about 60 km north but its current flight service is unconfirmed — check before relying on it.

Get around

The centre is walkable: castle, Ulu Camii and the mosque cluster sit within about 1 km. The bus terminal is 3 km northwest of the centre and the railway station about 1 km northwest of the castle — take a taxi or dolmuş between them and your hotel. No city rail line is running yet.
