Kütahya

Give Kütahya one night, or two if you want Aizanoi: it is a tile town with a small old quarter, not a headline stop.

Kütahya sits at 970 m on the rail and road line between Eskişehir and Afyonkarahisar, with a preserved Ottoman quarter, a hilltop castle and a tile tradition that still fills the shops. The sights are compact and walkable, so a single night covers the centre; add a second only for the Roman ruins at Aizanoi, 60 km southwest. Few international travellers stop here, and winter is genuinely cold.

Get around

Walk. The clocktower, Great Mosque, Germiyan Street, the museums and the castle path all sit within about 1.5 km. City buses and dolmuşes exist but you are unlikely to need them; taxis are cheap for the bus station run.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Winter nights drop below freezing at this altitude; pack for it from November to March.
  • The Tile Mosque (Çinili Cami) has been closed for restoration for years with no reopening date: check before walking out to it.
  • Buy tiles by grade — turist işi, fabrika işi, özel iş — and weigh the luggage cost; anything sold as antique is almost certainly not.
  • Never try to export a genuine antiquity: it is a serious offence.
  • The castle is a steep walk up; the road to the top is easier if you have a car.

Kütahya is a calm provincial city and street crime is rare; the practical risks are winter ice on the castle steps, unlit side streets after dark, and shops that quote a price only after you ask.
