  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Springfield is the third-largest city in Missouri and the self-styled birthplace of Route 66, on a flat plateau in the Ozarks. Almost everyone drives, the sights are spread across the metro, and the headline draw is the Wonders of Wildlife aquarium. It works as a two-night stop on an I-44 drive between St. Louis and Tulsa, or as a base for Branson and the Ozark hills.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Springfield is flat and car-first. Downtown, Commercial Street and the MSU campus are walkable or bikeable, but the aquarium, zoo and battlefield need a car, taxi or rideshare. I-44 crosses the city; US 60, 65 and 160 and Missouri 13 are the other main roads. Greyhound runs along I-44, usually transferring in Tulsa for Dallas and Austin.

Table Rock Lake access; a lake day, not a sightseeing day.

Small Branson-area lake town; go only if you want the water.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown and Park Central Square

Walkable core: History Museum on the Square, bars, coffee houses, the 1984 arcade. Best for a car-free evening.

Commercial Street

Historic district north of downtown with coffee houses and lofts; quieter, still being renovated.

South National Avenue

Chain hotels, Battlefield Mall and most of the restaurant strip; needs a car for everything.

Near Bass Pro / Sunshine Street

Steps from Wonders of Wildlife and the Bass Pro flagship; convenient if the aquarium is your priority.

Watch out

Safety

Springfield is a normal mid-size US city: use the same street sense you would anywhere after dark, keep to lit blocks downtown, and drive rather than walk between districts at night.
  • Distances between sights are longer than they look: budget 15–25 min by car between downtown, the aquarium and the battlefield.
  • Summer is humid and storm-prone; afternoons can turn quickly.
  • Restaurants inside Springfield city limits are smoke-free, but Missouri has no statewide restaurant smoking ban — outside the city, ask.
  • Cashew chicken is a local invention, not standard Chinese food: expect a sweet, thick oyster sauce.
