  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Joplin is a Route 66 crossroads at the meeting point of Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma, about 70 miles from Springfield and 113 from Tulsa. It is a lead-and-zinc mining town turned highway stop: a compact, partly restored Main Street, a mineral museum, a state-high waterfall at the south edge, and almost everything else reached by car. Most travellers use it as one night on an I-44 drive or a half-day break, not a destination in itself.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights, hotels and restaurants sit along Range Line Road, 7th Street, Main Street and 32nd Street, kilometres apart. The Sunshine Lamp Trolley covers the busiest commercial stretches only, so plan around it rather than relying on it. Downtown Main Street is walkable once you park.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

I-44 and Range Line Road (Exit 8)

Chain hotels stacked at the junction; easiest with a car and for a one-night stop.

Downtown / Main Street

Historic buildings, cafés and the art walk on foot; fewer beds, book ahead.

North Main Street

Independent motels north of town, cheaper, still a drive from the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Mostly petty crime, with the rougher blocks generally west of Main Street and trouble late at night. The bigger risks are weather and driving: April–June storms, and red-light running on Range Line Road.
  • Tornado Alley: April–June brings severe storms; know where to shelter and watch local warnings.
  • Red-light running is common on Range Line Road; wait a beat after your light turns green.
  • Old mine shafts and open pits dot the area, and ground has caved in before: stay on marked ground.
  • Petty crime is the main issue; the rougher blocks are generally west of Main Street, and most trouble is late at night.
  • Restaurants may allow smoking in designated sections; ask if it bothers you.
