Joplin
One night, two at most: see Grand Falls and the mineral museum, walk Main Street, then push on along I-44 or Route 66.
Joplin is a Route 66 crossroads at the meeting point of Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma, about 70 miles from Springfield and 113 from Tulsa. It is a lead-and-zinc mining town turned highway stop: a compact, partly restored Main Street, a mineral museum, a state-high waterfall at the south edge, and almost everything else reached by car. Most travellers use it as one night on an I-44 drive or a half-day break, not a destination in itself.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights, hotels and restaurants sit along Range Line Road, 7th Street, Main Street and 32nd Street, kilometres apart. The Sunshine Lamp Trolley covers the busiest commercial stretches only, so plan around it rather than relying on it. Downtown Main Street is walkable once you park.
