Best honeymoon destinations

Pick the month first, then the region: a 7-10 night trip in shoulder season to a place with direct flights and one base beats a two-country itinerary you spend in transit.

How to pick a honeymoon destination by season, budget and trip style, with a shortlist of regions that work in each month, realistic cost bands, and the paperwork to sort before you book.

Key facts

Short answer
There is no single best destination; the best one is the region whose dry, mild season matches your travel month and your budget
Best value months
Late April-May and September-early October in much of Europe and East Asia; shoulder weeks either side of peak are usually cheaper for the same weather
Peak price months
Late December-early January, February (Valentine's), July-August in Europe, Christmas in the tropics
Typical trip length
7-10 nights is the sweet spot; 5 nights feels rushed with long-haul flights
Mid-range cost band
US$250-500 per night for a good 4-5 star resort or boutique hotel in most shortlisted regions (2026 estimate)
Budget band
US$80-180 per night for a good 3-4 star or well-run guesthouse (2026 estimate)
Book flights
3-6 months ahead is a common window for peak dates; award seats usually open about 11 months out, but both vary by airline and route
Passport rule
Entry rules differ by destination and passport; many countries want 6 months validity beyond return and blank pages, but verify each one

The short answer

The best honeymoon destination is the one whose best season lines up with the dates you can actually take off, and whose flights you can afford without a stopover marathon. Start with the month, not the map. A place that is perfect in February can be in monsoon, 40 °C heat or closed for the season in July.

If your dates are fixed, work backwards: list three regions that are usually in their dry, mild window that month, check direct or one-stop flight times from your home airport, then compare hotel prices for your exact dates. If your dates are flexible, do the reverse: pick the trip you want (beach, city, road trip, mountains) and move the dates to its shoulder season, which is often cheaper than peak for similar weather.

For most couples, a 7-10 night trip with one or two bases beats a multi-country itinerary. Long-haul flights eat a day at each end, and honeymoons are the one trip where spending three hours in an airport bus is a bad trade.

The short answer
If your month isRegions often in a good windowWhy
January-FebruarySoutheast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia), Maldives, Mexico, Costa RicaUsually dry and mild; peak demand, so book early
March-AprilJapan (cherry blossom), Morocco, Greece (late April), PortugalMilder before the heat and crowds
May-JuneItaly, Greece, Spain, France, Bali, East AfricaWarm, long days, before European peak
July-AugustIceland, Norway, New Zealand (winter), Indonesia (dry side), PeruNorthern summer or southern winter
September-OctoberItaly, Greece, Portugal, Japan, Vietnam, South AfricaWarm sea, fewer crowds, better prices
November-DecemberThailand, Vietnam, Maldives, Australia, New Zealand, MexicoUsually dry in much of Asia and the south

Seasons shift year to year and vary within countries; check the current forecast and local advice for your exact destination before booking.

Do

  • Shoulder season is usually the single biggest lever on price: a week either side of peak often saves more than changing destination.
  • One base plus one short internal hop is easier than three hotels in ten nights.
  • Check the local rainy season, not just the temperature: 'dry season' and 'hot season' are different things in Southeast Asia and the Caribbean.

Watch out

  • Month-by-region weather here is a rough filter only. Countries have several climate zones and two coasts, so verify the season for your exact destination and dates before booking.

Who this applies to

This page is for couples planning a first honeymoon or a big anniversary trip, usually 5-14 nights, with a mix of beach, city and food. It assumes you are booking your own flights and hotels rather than a package, and that you care about weather, cost and how much time you lose in transit.

It also applies if you are travelling on two passports, changing your name after the wedding, or combining the honeymoon with a longer trip. Those three things create most of the paperwork problems, and they are covered below.

It is less useful if you want an all-inclusive resort where everything is arranged for you, or if you are travelling with children or a large group. For those, see the family and solo pages linked at the end.

How to choose, step by step

Step 1: fix your dates and count the nights, not the days. A 10-day trip with two long-haul flight days is really 8 usable days. Write down the number of full days you will actually have on the ground.

Step 2: shortlist by season. Use the table above and a month-by-month picker to find three regions usually in their good window, then check the season for the specific destination and coast. Cross off anything in cyclone, monsoon or extreme heat season for your dates.

Step 3: check the flights before the hotels. Look at total journey time, number of stops and typical fares for your dates. A destination that needs two connections each way costs you a day and adds risk if a flight is delayed.

Step 4: price three hotels in each shortlisted region for your exact dates. Compare the total for the trip, not the nightly rate, and include transfers, resort fees and taxes.

Step 5: decide the shape of the trip. Beach only, city plus beach, or a road trip. Most couples are happiest with one relaxed base plus one contrasting stop.

Step 6: book in the right order: flights first if dates are fixed, then the hotel, then transfers and any timed activities. Leave the last day free for the flight home.

Step 7: sort paperwork early: passports, visas, name changes, travel insurance and any vaccinations. These are the things that cannot be fixed in a week.

Do

  • Build one buffer day before the flight home; it turns a missed connection into an inconvenience rather than a disaster.
  • If you are using points or miles, check when your airline opens its schedule, often about 11 months out, and book as soon as award seats appear.
  • Screenshot your bookings and save them offline; resort wifi is not always reliable.

What it costs and how long it takes

Honeymoon costs vary more by season and flight routing than by destination. The biggest single line is usually the flight, then the hotel. A useful way to budget is to fix the flight cost first, then decide how much per night you can spend on the rest.

As a rough 2026 estimate, a mid-range honeymoon runs about US$250-500 per night for a good 4-5 star hotel or resort in most of the shortlisted regions, plus US$60-150 per day for food, drinks, transfers and activities. A budget trip using well-run 3-4 star hotels or guesthouses can run US$80-180 per night. Luxury villas, overwater bungalows and private transfers push well above that, often US$800-2,000 per night in peak season. These are planning ranges, not quotes: price your exact dates and hotels.

Flight costs depend on where you start and when you book. From the US, a long-haul return to Southeast Asia or the South Pacific is often US$900-1,600 economy, and US$2,500-5,000 in business. From the UK or Europe, similar long-haul routes run roughly £600-1,100 economy return. Shorter hops within Europe, the Caribbean or Mexico are usually cheaper and easier to book late. Fares move daily, so check live prices for your dates.

On time: 7-10 nights is the sweet spot for a long-haul honeymoon. Under 6 nights, the flight days dominate. Over 14 nights, most couples either add a second base or slow the pace right down. If you only have a week, stay closer to home or pick a destination with a direct flight.

LuxuryUS$800-2,000+ (2026 estimate)US$150-400+ (2026 estimate)7-14 nights, villa or overwater, private transfers

Bands are broad and vary by region, season and how far ahead you book; treat them as planning ranges and price your own dates.

Watch out

  • Peak dates (late December, Valentine's week, Easter, July-August in Europe) can double hotel rates and sell out 6-12 months ahead.

Exceptions and things that change the plan

Weather is the biggest exception. Hurricane and cyclone seasons in the Caribbean, the South Pacific and parts of Asia run roughly June-November, with the highest risk in late summer and autumn. Monsoon seasons in South and Southeast Asia vary by coast, so the same country can be wet on one side and dry on the other in the same month. Check the season for your exact destination, not the country as a whole.

Religious and national holidays change everything: Ramadan shifts dates each year and affects opening hours and alcohol availability in some countries; Golden Week in Japan, Lunar New Year across East and Southeast Asia, and European August holidays all push prices up and fill hotels. Check the calendar for your exact dates.

Name changes after marriage are a common trap. If you have not yet updated your passport, book flights in the name printed on the passport you will travel with. Some airlines charge to correct a name, and some countries require the ticket name to match the passport exactly.

Visa and entry rules differ by passport, even for couples travelling together. One of you may need a visa while the other does not. Check the destination's official immigration site and your own government's travel advice for your nationality.

Health rules can also apply: some destinations require proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving from certain countries, and some ask for a yellow fever certificate for entry. Check before you book, because some vaccinations need to be given weeks in advance.

Watch out

  • Do not book non-refundable flights before checking visa processing times for both passports.
  • If you are changing your name, sort the passport first or book in your current name.

Compare the main regions

Use this as a starting filter, then check the month-by-month picker and destination-specific seasonal advice for your exact dates. The right column is the trade-off you accept by choosing that region.

Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia) gives a mix of beach, food, cities and value, with dry seasons running roughly November-April in much of the region, though the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman coast differ. The trade-off is long flights from the US and Europe, and heat or rain in the shoulder months.

The Maldives and South Pacific (Fiji) are the classic beach-and-resort honeymoon: short internal transfers, overwater or beach villas, and very little planning once you arrive. The trade-off is cost and limited things to do beyond the resort.

Japan and East Asia suit couples who want cities, food and culture more than a beach. Spring and autumn are the usual best windows. The trade-off is higher prices in cherry blossom and autumn leaf season, and more walking than a resort trip.

Europe (Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, France) is the easiest long-haul-free option for UK and European couples, with strong food, cities and coast. The trade-off is peak-season crowds and heat in July-August, and higher prices in August.

The Americas (Mexico, Costa Rica) and the Caribbean offer short flights from the US and good value outside peak weeks. The trade-off is hurricane season in summer and autumn and busy winter holidays.

Southern Africa, New Zealand and Australia work on the opposite calendar: their summer is November-March, which makes them a good choice for a northern-winter honeymoon. The trade-off is long flights and, in some areas, malaria precautions.

Paperwork to sort before you book

Passports first. Entry rules differ by destination and passport. Many countries want at least six months of validity beyond your planned return date and one or two blank pages, but not all do, so verify the rule for each destination and each passport. If either passport is close to expiry or full, renew before booking anything non-refundable.

Visas second. Rules depend on your nationality, not on travelling as a couple. Check the destination's official immigration or e-visa site, and your own government's travel advice, for both passports. Some countries offer visa on arrival or an e-visa; others require an embassy appointment that can take weeks.

Insurance third. A policy that covers medical treatment, evacuation, cancellation and, if you plan any water sports or hiking, those activities specifically. Read the exclusions for pre-existing conditions and for alcohol-related incidents, which are common honeymoon claims.

Health fourth. Check recommended and required vaccinations for your destinations, and any malaria prophylaxis. Some vaccines need a course over several weeks, so start early. Carry a small kit with rehydration salts and any prescription medicine in its original packaging with a copy of the prescription.

Finally, make copies: photos of your passport, visa, insurance policy and bookings saved offline and shared with someone at home. If a passport is lost, a digital copy speeds up the replacement.

Do

  • Check both passports against the destination's rules separately; they can differ.
  • Save a photo of your passport and insurance in an offline folder and email it to yourself.
  • If you need a visa, apply as soon as your dates are fixed; processing times vary widely.

Watch out

  • Do not rely on a travel agent to check visa rules for both passports; verify with the official source.

Plan the trip

Once you have a shortlist, build a rough day-by-day plan before you book. That forces you to see how many days you actually lose to flights and transfers, and whether the trip shape works.

Use the itinerary builder to save a draft with your dates, flights and hotels, and the best-month picker to compare weather and prices across your shortlisted regions. Both are free and need no account to start.

If your dates are fixed and you are still choosing, work through the step-by-step planning guide, which covers flights, hotels, insurance and packing in order.

Questions people ask

Best honeymoon destinations: what is the short answer?

There is no single best destination. The best one is the region whose dry, mild season matches your travel month and whose flights fit your budget. Pick the month first, then shortlist three regions in season, then compare flight times and hotel prices for your exact dates. A 7-10 night trip with one or two bases usually beats a multi-country itinerary.

Who does it apply to?

Couples planning a first honeymoon or a big anniversary trip, usually 5-14 nights, booking their own flights and hotels. It also covers two-passport couples, name changes after marriage, and combining the honeymoon with a longer trip. It is less useful if you want a fully packaged all-inclusive resort or are travelling with children or a group.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

As a rough 2026 estimate, a mid-range honeymoon runs about US$250-500 per night for a good 4-5 star hotel, plus US$60-150 per day for food, transfers and activities. Budget trips can run US$80-180 per night; luxury villas and overwater bungalows often exceed US$800 per night in peak season. Long-haul flights from the US are often US$900-1,600 economy return. Seven to ten nights is the sweet spot. Treat all of these as planning ranges and price your own dates.

When should I book a honeymoon?

A common window is 3-6 months ahead for peak dates, and earlier if you are using points or miles, which usually open about 11 months out, though this varies by airline. Hotels are often booked 3-6 months ahead for peak weeks and 1-3 months for shoulder season. Sort passports, visas and insurance as early as possible, because visa appointments and vaccinations can take weeks.

What is the cheapest month for a honeymoon?

Shoulder season is usually the cheapest: late April to May and September to early October in much of Europe, and the edges of the dry season in Asia. Avoid late December, Valentine's week, Easter, and July-August in Europe, when prices and demand peak. Moving your dates by two weeks can cut hotel costs noticeably, but the exact saving depends on the destination.

Do we need travel insurance for a honeymoon?

Yes. Get a policy that covers medical treatment, evacuation, cancellation and any activities you plan, such as water sports or hiking. Check exclusions for pre-existing conditions and alcohol-related incidents. Buy it soon after booking so cancellation cover starts early.

What if we have different passports?

Visa and entry rules apply per person, not per couple. One of you may need a visa while the other does not. Check the destination's official immigration site and your own government's travel advice for each passport separately, and allow extra time for embassy appointments.
