Kalisz claims to be Poland's oldest town, named as Calisia by Ptolemy in the 2nd century, and it sits on the Amber Road in south-eastern Wielkopolskie. It is a mid-sized city of about 100,000 with a compact rebuilt centre, two theatres and a small archaeological reserve. It is not a headline destination: come for a quiet half-day or a night between Poznań and Wrocław, not as a base for a week.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Old Market Square, the cathedral and the Franciscan church sit within about 10 minutes of each other. Kaliskie Linie Autobusowe (KLA) runs the city buses; check the current ticket rules and where to buy before you board. The railway station sits south-west of the square — walk it or take a short taxi.
