Łódź is Poland's third-largest city and was built almost from scratch by 19th-century textile mills, so it has Europe-scale factory architecture and a film-school reputation rather than an old town. Piotrkowska Street runs 4 km through the centre and holds most of what you will do. It sits at the crossing of the A1 and A2 motorways and has direct trains from Warsaw and Kraków, which makes it a practical one- or two-night stop rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Piotrkowska Street is 4 km end to end and most sights sit within 2 km of it. Trams and buses (MPK Łódź) cover the rest; validate your ticket as soon as you board. A 20-minute ticket costs about 4.40 zł and a 24-hour ticket about 18 zł (2026 estimate, check current fares). Buy in kiosks, ticket machines or by app; drivers do not sell tickets. Bikes are rentable in season but not in winter.

Watch out

Safety

Łódź is a normal Polish city for visitors: watch your bag on trams and around the station, avoid unlit side streets off Piotrkowska at night, and expect the centre to be busiest and safest around Piotrkowska and Manufaktura.
  • Validate your ticket immediately on boarding; controllers fine on the spot and drivers do not sell tickets.
  • Some streets and façades off Piotrkowska are still run-down and poorly lit at night; stick to busy streets after dark.
  • In winter snow is sometimes not cleared from pavements, leaving slush — bring waterproof shoes.
  • Łódź Kaliska station handles few transit trains; most intercity services use Łódź Fabryczna or Łódź Widzew.
  • Łódź's own airport has few routes; check Warsaw as an alternative before booking.
