Kalisz
Give Kalisz one day and one night: Old Market Square, the cathedral and the Zawodzie reserve, then move on to Poznań or Wrocław.
Kalisz claims to be Poland's oldest town, named as Calisia by Ptolemy in the 2nd century, and it sits on the Amber Road in south-eastern Wielkopolskie. It is a mid-sized city of about 100,000 with a compact rebuilt centre, two theatres and a small archaeological reserve. It is not a headline destination: come for a quiet half-day or a night between Poznań and Wrocław, not as a base for a week.

The centre is walkable: Old Market Square, the cathedral and the Franciscan church sit within about 10 minutes of each other. Kaliskie Linie Autobusowe (KLA) runs the city buses; check the current ticket rules and where to buy before you board. The railway station sits south-west of the square — walk it or take a short taxi.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Dzień dobry, handshake; Pan/Pani with surname; avoid: First names with older people too early

- Name days: Wish people well on their name day (imieniny); avoid: Ignoring it if a colleague mentions it

- Queues: Let older people and pregnant women go first where signs ask; avoid: Skipping the queue at the kasa
Scams and watch-outs
- Kalisz is not a rail hub: most trains run via Ostrów Wielkopolski, so check connections before you commit.
- Some sights keep short hours or close out of season — confirm before travelling.
- English is common with under-40s; older staff may not speak it.
Kalisz is a quiet mid-sized Polish city and serious crime against visitors is rare; take the usual precautions with bags and cash, and check your route after dark if you are walking back from the station (check).
