Give Bodø 1–2 nights as a ferry or rail stop for Lofoten, not a destination week: the town centre is walkable in an hour.
Bodø is the northern terminus of Norway's national railway and the main ferry port for the Lofoten islands, on a windy peninsula above the Arctic Circle. The city centre was rebuilt after 1940 and looks modern; most travellers use it for one or two nights before a boat or plane to Lofoten, or as a stop on the Nordlandsbanen line from Trondheim.

Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk. City buses run on a zone system, roughly every 15 minutes on weekdays toward the western districts; the Sentrumsrunden loop covers the centre. Taxis are metered and priced per trip, not per passenger — a 10 km ride is about 200–250 kr, so a full car can beat bus fares. Rental cars make sense for Saltstraumen and the coast roads.
