Bodø
Give Bodø 1–2 nights as a ferry or rail stop for Lofoten, not a destination week: the town centre is walkable in an hour.
Bodø is the northern terminus of Norway's national railway and the main ferry port for the Lofoten islands, on a windy peninsula above the Arctic Circle. The city centre was rebuilt after 1940 and looks modern; most travellers use it for one or two nights before a boat or plane to Lofoten, or as a stop on the Nordlandsbanen line from Trondheim.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk. City buses run on a zone system, roughly every 15 minutes on weekdays toward the western districts; the Sentrumsrunden loop covers the centre. Taxis are metered and priced per trip, not per passenger — a 10 km (6.2 mi) ride is about 200–250 kr, so a full car can beat bus fares. Rental cars make sense for Saltstraumen and the coast roads. The centre is small enough to walk. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, first names; avoid: Small talk that is too personal
- Nature: Greet other hikers, close gates, carry litter out; avoid: Loud music on trails
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring flowers or chocolates; 'takk for maten' after the meal; avoid: Arriving late
- Conversation: Modest, factual, humorous; avoid: Showing off wealth — Norwegians are rich but understated
- 17 May: Dress up, join the crowds, wave a flag; avoid: Treating the parades as a tourist show
- Queues: Take a number; avoid: Pushing in
Scams and watch-outs
- It is exposed and windy year-round: a windproof shell matters more than an umbrella.
- The Lofoten ferry to Moskenes sells tickets on board and can fill in summer — arrive early and check the operator's timetable.
- Alcohol is sold only at Vinmonopolet shops (two in town) after weekday hours; supermarkets sell beer only until 20:00 on weekdays and 18:00 on Saturdays.
- Camping at Bodøsjøen sits under the airport approach: expect aircraft noise.
- Winter days are short and roads can close over Saltfjellet; check the rail and road status before a long transfer.
Bodø is a safe, small city; the real risks are wind and weather, dark winter roads and the cost of taxis. Keep a windproof layer and check ferry and rail times before you commit.
