Tromsø sits about 350 km north of the Arctic Circle on a low island, with the airport, the centre and birch forest on the same 10 km strip. It is a working university town; the municipality has around 78,000 people, while the urban area is smaller. Art, bars and restaurants sit inside a landscape of fjord and mountain. Aurora season runs roughly September to March; the midnight sun runs 18 May to 26 July. Most visitors come by plane, stay 3 nights and book one or two guided chases, because the lights and the whales are not guaranteed on any single night.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable. Buses are frequent and run until around midnight, with some night and airport routes; buy tickets in the Svipper app or from a ticket point, as cash is not accepted on board. A single 90-minute ticket costs 50 kr, 30 kr off-peak (Mon–Fri 09:00–14:00 and 17:00–01:00); a 24-hour ticket is 140 kr and a 7-day ticket 327 kr. Check the direction of a route before boarding: many run through the centre, so 'via sentrum' can mean it is already heading away from it. Taxis and Bolt operate; the airport run is about 260 kr.

Watch out

Safety

Tromsø is a safe, small city and violent crime is rare. The real risks are winter ice on pavements, cold and wind on tours, and weather cancellations: dress in layers, keep a spare night, and never walk on fjord ice.
  • Winter roads and pavements are icy: bring or buy studded grips for your shoes.
  • Aurora and whale tours can be cancelled for weather; keep one spare night and read the operator's refund rule before paying.
  • Polar night (late Nov to mid-Jan) gives only a few hours of dim daylight; plan indoor sights and tours, not viewpoints.
  • Cash is not accepted on city buses; set up the Svipper app or buy a ticket before boarding.
  • There is no train to Tromsø: the nearest railheads are Narvik and Fauske, reached by bus.
