Batu Ferringhi is Penang's resort strip: a long, developed beach on the north coast with a nightly market, watersports and a row of hotels from RM 90 guesthouses to RM 500+ resorts. The sand is fine but the water is murky and jellyfish appear at times. Treat it as a beach base for 1–2 nights, then move to George Town for food and heritage.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Rapid Penang buses 101 and 102 link George Town, Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang, roughly every 20–30 min until about 23:00. Taxis rarely use the meter: agree the fare first. Most resorts run shuttles to George Town.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Rapid Penang bus 101 or 102 from the main road

Go early for hawker food and shophouses; last buses back run until about 23:00.

Penang National Park and Teluk Bahang

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Bus 101 to Teluk Bahang, then walk to the park entrance

Hike to Monkey Beach and take a boat back; arrange the boat before you set off.

Entopia and Tropical Spice Garden

go

Door to door: About 20–30 min

Bus 101 toward Teluk Bahang

Both sit between Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang; Entopia is best in the morning.

Air Itam and Penang Hill

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Bus to George Town, change for Air Itam, then the funicular

Long as a day trip from the coast; better done from a George Town base.

Balik Pulau

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Bus via George Town, or a taxi across the island

Rice paddies and fruit farms; slow without your own transport.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Batu Ferringhi main strip

Hotels and guesthouses along Jalan Batu Ferringhi, walkable to the night market and beach.

Tanjung Bungah

Quieter, east of the strip; cheaper rooms and a local market, 10–15 min by bus.

Teluk Bahang

West end near the national park and Entopia; few places to eat after dark.

Watch out

Safety

Petty theft is uncommon but keep bags zipped in the night market. The real risks are the sea (jellyfish, murky water, no lifeguards in places), unlicensed watersports operators and taxis that refuse the meter.
  • Jellyfish in the water at times: vinegar on a sting, and see a doctor if you get chest pain.
  • Water quality is poor near the busiest watersports stretch.
  • Taxis often refuse the meter; fix the price before you get in.
  • The night market starts high and expects haggling.
  • Afternoon storms in the wet months can cancel watersports.
