Butterworth is the mainland terminal for Penang: the rail station, the Penang Sentral bus station and the ferry pier sit within a few minutes of each other under the same overpass. Almost nothing here is a reason to stay, but everything here is a reason to pass through. Most travellers sleep on Penang Island and use Butterworth to reach the ETS line, the Thai border or the mainland suburbs.

Getting around

Rapid Penang buses cover the town and the rest of Penang state; the ferry, rail station and Penang Sentral are linked by covered walkways, so the transfer is on foot. For anything beyond walking distance, use a bus, a ride-hailing app or a taxi — the town is spread out and the heat makes long walks unpleasant.

Watch out

Safety

Butterworth is a working town and generally safe by day; the real risks are heat, traffic on the outer ring road, and bus-station touts. Keep bags zipped in the terminal area and avoid unlit back lanes after dark.
  • Touts at the bus station sell overpriced vouchers instead of tickets: buy at the counter or online.
  • The new ferries carry pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles only — no cars.
  • Ferry toilets are best avoided; use the terminal or a café before boarding.
  • ETS seats to Kuala Lumpur sell out on holidays: book ahead.
  • Midday heat and afternoon storms: plan indoor stops between about 12:00 and 15:00.
