Larissa is Greece's fourth-largest city and the capital of Thessaly, on the main Athens–Thessaloniki rail line 355 km from Athens and 150 km from Thessaloniki. It is a working agricultural and university town with few tourists, a pedestrianised centre, two ancient theatres visible from the street and a strong taverna and bar scene. Most travellers pass through; a night here breaks the rail journey and puts Meteora, Mount Olympus and the Thessaly plain within reach.

Getting around

The commercial centre is pedestrianised and small: most sights are a few minutes apart on foot. Larissa is flat, so bicycles work well, with lanes on Papanastasiou and part of Kyprou street. City buses (Astiko KTEL) cost about €1.20 a ride and tickets can be bought in their app. Taxis are cheap: a hail within the city should not exceed about €4, with a double meter rate from midnight to 05:00 and small extras from the bus or train station. Parking in the centre is hard; use a lot.

Watch out

Safety

Larissa is a low-crime city and the centre is safe to walk at night. The real risks are summer heat, taxi meter games and the riverbank after dark: agree the fare, keep to lit streets.
  • Taxis: check the meter rate (rate 1 from 05:00 to 24:00, double rate midnight to 05:00). Ask for a receipt and note the plate if overcharged; the tourist police line is 1571 (≈ US$1,900).
  • Both ancient theatres are fenced and not open to the public: view the first from Eleftheriou Venizelou street, the second from nearby streets.
  • Shops close Sunday; weekday hours split into morning and evening openings, so plan purchases around 09:00–14:00 and 18:00–21:00.
  • Summer heat on the Thessaly plain is severe: shift walking to early morning and evening.
  • Restaurants open late (roughly 21:00–24:00) and many tavernas close during the day; souvlaki shops stay open all day.
