Chorefto is the Aegean-side beach and old port of Zagora, on the northeast slope of Mount Pelion. It is a summer village: hotels, rooms to let and a campsite line one long beach road, and the sand runs 1,650 m from a rocky point in the north to the small port jetty. Zagora, 8 km up a winding road, adds year-round tavernas, a historic library and the apple cooperative. Two or three nights covers the beach, one boat or kayak morning and a day in the villages; a single night is enough if you only want to swim.

Getting around

On foot along the beach road for swimming, eating and the supermarket. The KTEL Volou bus links Chorefto with Zagora, Pouri and Volos, but services are few: check the timetable before you rely on it. A car or taxi is the practical way to reach Agii Saranta, Parisaina and the mountain villages; the Zagora road is winding and sometimes narrow, and the descents to Agii Saranta and Analipsi are steep with blind hairpins.

Watch out

Safety

Chorefto is a small, low-crime beach village; the real risks are sea conditions, sun exposure on shadeless beaches and the steep, narrow access roads. In an emergency call 112; the coast guard is 108.
  • Parking at Agii Saranta fills before noon on summer weekends; park in a lay-by on the descent and walk down.
  • Chorefto's water can turn rough even in summer; swim near the lifeguard station and read the flag.
  • The southern third of the beach and the water entry are smooth rocks, not sand.
  • Many beach bars and tavernas close from September to May: check before you go.
  • The bus from Volos runs a limited number of times a day; missing the last one means a taxi.
