Larissa is Greece's fourth-largest city and the capital of Thessaly, on the main Athens–Thessaloniki rail line 355 km from Athens and 150 km from Thessaloniki. It is a working agricultural and university town with few tourists, a pedestrianised centre, two ancient theatres visible from the street and a strong taverna and bar scene. Most travellers pass through; a night here breaks the rail journey and puts Meteora, Mount Olympus and the Thessaly plain within reach.

- Summer heat on the Thessaly plain is severe: shift walking to early morning and evening.
- Restaurants open late (roughly 21:00–24:00) and many tavernas close during the day; souvlaki shops stay open all day.
