CadillacCadillac, Michigan
Come for 2 nights in summer or a ski weekend in winter, base downtown or in Cadillac West, and drive everywhere: no car, no trip.
Cadillac is a small northern-Michigan lake town of about 10,000 people, sitting between Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell, roughly 1 h 30 min by car north of Grand Rapids on US-131. It works as a summer lake base (swimming, biking, the 2.5-mile park trail) or a winter snow-sports base (Caberfae Peaks, snowmobile trails). Two nights covers the town; three to four nights if you are boating, golfing or skiing. A car is effectively required.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
Drive. US-131 and M-115 meet the town, Mitchell Street is the main drag, and parking downtown is free and rarely full. A paved path runs along the Lake Cadillac shore between downtown and Cadillac West, so a bike covers the lakefront without a car. The Cadillac/Wexford Transit Authority runs demand-response buses plus a summer midday fixed route between Cadillac West and downtown; taxis and rideshare exist but are thin.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Downtown (east shore of Lake Cadillac)
Shops, restaurants and the lakefront path within walking distance; best for a first visit without a boat.
Cadillac West (M-115 / Sunnyside Drive)
Motels and resorts on the Lake Mitchell side; quieter, needs a car for downtown.
South Mitchell Street / US-131
Chain hotels with free parking at the highway exit; cheapest and easiest for one night.
Mitchell State Park
Camping between the two lakes, with the canal at the door; book early for summer weekends.

Safety
- Snowmobiles are illegal inside the city limits; trails start outside town.
- Sidewalks are missing in parts of Haring Township north of 13th Street: walkers end up on the road shoulder.
- Winter sidewalks can be clear while crossings are ice and slush: bring boots with grip.
- Lake ice is never officially safe: check local ice reports before walking or skating on it.
- Many lakefront restaurants and resorts close or cut hours outside summer: check before you drive out.
