Frankfort is a small Lake Michigan harbour town on Betsie Bay, population about 1,300, in Benzie County. It works as a two-night base for Point Betsie Lighthouse, the Betsie Valley Trail and the southern end of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Come between June and September for warm water and open businesses; most of the town shuts down outside that window.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: Point Betsie is about 4.5 mi north on M-22, Sleeping Bear Dunes further north, and Traverse City about 45 min east. Downtown Frankfort itself is walkable, and the paved beach-to-beach trail links Frankfort and Elberta on foot or by bike.

Frankfort is a low-crime small town; the real risks are Lake Michigan rip currents and cold water, deer on M-22 at dusk, and winter ice on the piers.
  • Summer weekends fill every room in Benzie County: book weeks ahead.
  • Lake Michigan water stays cold even in August; the surf and rip currents are the real risk.
  • Many restaurants and shops close or cut hours from October to May: check before you drive.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on stretches of M-22 and inside the dunes.
