  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Saskatoon is Saskatchewan's largest city, built on bluffs above the South Saskatchewan River, with a compact, walkable core of riverbank parks, bridges and a restored downtown. Most travellers use it as a 2-night stop on a Prairies road or rail trip; the city rewards a slow day on the Meewasin Trail more than a checklist of sights.

Arrive & move

Getting around

The downtown, River Landing, Broadway and the university are walkable and linked by the Meewasin Trail. Saskatoon Transit covers the rest of the city; a single adult fare is about $3, or a 10-ride GoCard package for about $25 (check). Taxis and ride-hailing (Uber, Riide) are easy to find; a 10-minute taxi ride runs about $10–15. A car helps for outlying sights and day trips.

Watch out

Safety

Saskatoon is generally safe for visitors in the downtown, Broadway and university areas. The main risks are winter cold and ice, and the alphabet-avenue district west of Idylwyld Drive, which has more crime than the rest of the city.
  • Winters are severe: −20 °C and below is normal Dec–Feb, with snow from Oct. Pack for the season you actually get.
  • The alphabet-avenue area west of Idylwyld Drive has more crime than other districts; there is little reason for visitors to be there.
  • Saskatchewan does not observe daylight saving: summer daylight runs roughly 4:45am–9pm, winter about 9:15am–5pm.
  • Distances between Prairie towns are long; fill the tank before leaving the city.
