  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Watrous is a town of about 1,900 on Highway 2; Manitou Beach is a resort village 5 km north on Highway 365, on the south shore of Little Manitou Lake. The lake is highly saline, so swimmers float easily. The draw is the water, Danceland's horsehair-sprung floor, the regional park and a drive-in. It is a one-night stop between Saskatoon and Regina, not a destination week.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is effectively required: there is no convenient public transport between Watrous and Manitou Beach, and the 5 km gap on Highway 365 is not a pleasant walk with bags. A bike works once you are parked. VIA Rail's Canadian stops at Watrous only as a flag stop with 48-hour advance notice, so it is not a practical arrival unless you pre-arrange it.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min each way

Drive Highway 2 south and Highway 15, about 45 km southeast of Watrous

North end of the lake is a major waterfowl staging area; over 280 bird species recorded. Bring binoculars and check access before you go.

Saskatoon

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Drive Highway 16 west, then Highway 2 north

Doable as a long day, but better used as your arrival or departure leg.

Regina

caution

Door to door: About 2 h

Drive Highway 2 south

Four hours of driving round trip; treat it as a transfer, not a day trip.

Humboldt

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Drive Highway 20 east from Highway 2

Closest larger town for a wider choice of food and supplies.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, high exposure: the real risks are long empty drives, winter road ice and swimming in very salty water with open cuts. 911 works throughout.
  • No useful public transport: without a car you are stuck between town and beach.
  • Many beach businesses are seasonal; confirm the drive-in, Burger Buoy and Village Perk are open before you build a day around them.
  • The lake is very salty: rinse off after swimming and keep it out of eyes and any open cuts.
  • Summer weekends fill the regional park and Manitou Beach rooms; reserve ahead.
  • Winter driving on Highway 2 and 365 is exposed to prairie wind and ice.
