Dexter is a village of about 4,000 people on the Huron River, 15 minutes northwest of Ann Arbor between Ann Arbor and Chelsea on I-94. Its draw is small and seasonal: a downtown around the village green, the Dexter Cider Mill running since 1886, two metroparks on the river, and a handful of community events. You come for an afternoon, not a week, and you sleep in Ann Arbor, Chelsea or Pinckney because the village has no hotels.

Getting around

You need a car. Downtown Dexter is walkable in 10 minutes end to end, but the cider mill, both metroparks, the trout farm and the orchards sit 5–15 min out on country roads with no useful bus. I-94 links Dexter to Ann Arbor and Chelsea; Dexter-Ann Arbor Road and Huron River Drive are the slower, prettier links to Ann Arbor.

Watch out

Safety

Dexter is a low-crime small town; the real risks are driving — deer on rural roads at dusk, winter ice, and no sidewalks outside the village centre. Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
  • No hotels or B&Bs inside the village limits: book Ann Arbor, Chelsea or Pinckney.
  • The cider mill is seasonal — late August to mid-November only, and it closes for winter.
  • Spring Valley Trout Farm is closed in winter until early May.
  • Metroparks charge a daily vehicle entry fee; check the current rate at the gate.
  • Rural roads around the orchards have no lighting and no sidewalks: drive, don't walk, after dark.
